What is IOP
What is an IOP Program?
Welcome to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a highly effective mental health program designed to provide intensive therapeutic support and psychiatry for individuals experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms and impairment in their daily lives. Our IOP stands for Intensive Outpatient Program, which involves a minimum of 10 hours of weekly therapeutic support, comprising group and individual therapy sessions, and psychiatry when indicated.
Unlike residential treatment, IOP is an outpatient program, allowing patients to return home each day while still benefiting from structured, therapeutic programming. Our IOP is structured around group therapy, where patients learn valuable coping skills, build interpersonal awareness, and experience a sense of belonging and shared understanding among fellow group members, contributing positively to their recovery journey.

Our General Adult Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to provide short-term, intensive therapeutic treatment for individuals aged 18 and above. Our mission centers around honoring the innate wisdom of both patient and practitioner, fostering connection, healing, and growth. We prioritize promoting curiosity, empathy, relationships, dialogue, and collaboration, while emphasizing the significance of the mind-body connection in the journey towards wholeness and meaning-making. Within our program, our dedicated team will meet you with empathy, compassion, integrity, mutual respect, and cultural humility, ensuring you receive the support and care you deserve. Through group therapy, the primary modality in this program, you’ll find a safe space to share, receive feedback, practice coping skills, build trust, and form a supportive community of understanding peers. Portland Mental Health and Wellness’ IOP Team develops an individualized treatment plan for each patient that includes:
- Group Therapy 3 days a week, for 3 hours a day
- Weekly individual therapy with your individual therapist
- Regular family or relationship therapy is included when relevant
- Care Coordination and Case Management
- Medication Management- as needed basis

In-Person & Online Adult LGBTQAI+ Intensive Outpatient Program
LGBTQAI+ Adult Intensive Outpatient Program
We understand that it is especially challenging for LGBTQAI+ folks to seek mental health treatment due to the possibility of experiencing further oppression, discrimination, judgment, and non-affirming environments. Yet, due to a variety of circumstances, folks within the LGBTQAI+ community are more likely to experience mental health challenges, compared to their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts. You can expect that the IOP staff have lived experience as part of the LGBTQAI+ community, and/or hold other minority identities. Though the curriculum in this program will match the Adult General Program, the group and individual therapy content and process will be further informed by minority stress theory and intersectionality, with an anti-oppression framework.

Intensive Outpatient Services: $549.00/day
Cancellation & No Show Fee: $250.00

Most insurance plans require a prior authorization for coverage of Intensive Outpatient services. We will attempt to secure the authorization for services on your behalf.

Appropriate Referrals
Age: 18+
Symptoms: moderate to severe, not remitting/improving with outpatient therapy, risk/safety concerns are commonly present but aren’t a requirement
Functional Impairment: moderate to severe
The purpose of IOP is to stabilize a patient, in 8-12 weeks. Our goal is to keep patients out of the hospital and support patients who need a step-down after discharge from inpatient or a visit to the ER for psychiatric reasons.
Inappropriate Referrals
Active eating disorder(s)
-Active eating disorders must be treated by specific eating disorder programs
Active addiction or significant substance abuse
-Active addiction or significant substance abuse must be treated by specific substance programs
Active psychosis
-If a patient’s psychosis impacts their understanding of reality and their ability to engage appropriately in group and benefit from group, their symptoms need to be managed by medication first

What is IOP?
IOP stands for Intensive Outpatient Program. IOP is intensive, because it involves 10 hours minimum of therapeutic support weekly. IOP is outpatient, meaning patients attend group and individual therapy sessions and go home each day, rather than temporarily living at our facility. Patients are in IOP for approximately 8-12 weeks.
Is IOP appropriate for me?
IOP is appropriate for people who need a step-down in level of care, following hospitalization or residential treatment. IOP is also appropriate for people who need a higher level of support than is provided in weekly or twice weekly outpatient therapy. Our IOP was created specifically for adults who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms and moderate to severe impairment in their day-to-day lives. Most people continue to work and/or attend school while in IOP.
When does IOP meet?
IOP meets online on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am-12:00pm (General Program) or 1:00-4:00 (LGBTQAI+ Program) OR
IOP meets in-person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am-12:00 pm (LGBTQAI+ Program)
What is the structure of IOP?
IOP is structured, therapeutic programming that consists of group therapy and individual therapy. In the IOP groups, patients can expect to learn concrete coping skills and build awareness and growth in their interpersonal relationships. In individual therapy, patients work with their clinician to personalize the skills they are learning in IOP groups and address interpersonal conflicts with family, friends, and others.
Why group therapy?
Because IOP primarily consists of group therapy, patients have the opportunity to receive support from clinicians, as well as fellow group members. Patients often report a sense of belonging, shared understanding, and feeling less alone as a result of attending group therapy IOP sessions. Learning from and supporting each other in IOP has positive effects on every patient’s recovery journey.
Why do you have virtual IOPs?
We offer both virtual and in-person options to meet the accessibility needs of our patients.
What if you already have a therapist?
Everyone in our IOP will be assigned an individual therapist who they meet with weekly throughout their time in the program. Patients can choose to see an additional therapist outside of the IOP, however, it may not be covered by insurance. You are responsible for contacting your insurance company to clarify your coverage for IOP and outpatient therapy services at the same time.
